Seborrheic Keratosis Seborrheic Keratosis, sometimes called senile wart, is a noncancerous condition that occurs as a light brown, black or tan growth on the surface of the skin These are usually harmless but may sometimes get irritated or be aesthetically unappealing They can be removed, if necessary Common characteristics This condition, known as Seborrheic keratosis, is caused by the thickening of the skin around the sebaceous (oil) glands It is a common, noncancerous skin condition that is also referred to as wisdom spots and age (maturity) spots as they are mostly seen in older people They are also called barnacles Seborrheic keratoses are common and, most importantly, benign skin growths At first glance, the raised skin might look harmful — and a cluster of them may be even more disturbing But by definition, these brown skin spots are noncancerous skin growths Though any unexpected skin changes should always be checked out by a dermatologist
